Featured Collaborator: Christian Smith

Melbourne born baritone Christian Smith is well known for his versatility as a singer. Christian is in frequent demand as a soloist for art song, oratorio, and passions. In 2017 Christian moved to the UK where he has enjoyed much success as a freelance performer, singing many times with the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford, under Stephen Darlington. In 2018 Christian was part of the European premiere of Howard Goodall’s passion, Invictus, and its subsequent recording. In 2018 Christian appeared as a soloist in the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music at St Pancras Church, London. 2018 also saw Christian move to London to teach at the prestigious Whitgift School. 

In 2019 Christian performed as a soloist on BBC Radio 3 as part of their live Choral Evensong programme. In March Christian made his bass soloist debut for Messiah in London with the London Mozart Players, and in May, Christian gave a solo recital with world-renowned pianist Simon Lane.

Christian moved back to Melbourne in July 2019 to be the baritone soloist in the world premiere of Stefan Cassomenos’ Dixit Dominus. 2019 has also seen Christian continue to work the leading Melbourne vocal group, The Parlour. 

Christian’s other passion is as a mathematics educator and he is currently teaching at Melbourne Girls’ Grammar School in South Yarra.

Christian Smith collaborated with PLEXUS in 2019 performing Requiem for the End of Time by Stefan Cassomenos, at PLEXUS: Paracosm (Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre).
