Featured Collaborator: Budhi Ngurah

Drs. I Gusti Ngurah Wiryawan Budhiana, M.Hum or Budhi Ngurah is known as a cellist, composer, music director, and academic. He was born in Jember, 1958 (East-Java). He received his formal education (cello) in SMM Yogyakarta and ISI Yogyakarta. His most influential cello teachers were: R. Roesman (Indonesia), Timothy Hughes (England), Liem Kek Beng (Holland), and Rene Berman (Holland). Budhi also studied conducting with numerous teachers: Ed. Van Ness (USA), Fumiyosi Maezawa (Japan), Dr. Alec Roth (England), Arie van Beck (Holland) and Diego Mason (France). Since an early age he has written numerous works for cello, and has been active in many workshops and summer schools, including the ASEAN Youth Music Workshop as participant (1979, 1981, 1985), ASEAN Youth Music Workshop as tutor (1991-1993), ASEAN Composer Music Workshop as participant (1991), Dartington International Summer School, England (Conducting) (1991), and as Asian Composer League (ACL) Coordinator Composition in Yogyakarta and Solo (1999). He currently holds the positions of Lecturer at the Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta, Lecturer at the Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI) Padangpanjang, Lecturer at the Universitas Kristen Immanuel (UKRIM), and is active as a conductor and composer.

PLEXUS gave the world premiere of Budhi Ngurah’s new work 9 Variasi Pelog at the Concert Hall Taman Budaya, Yogyakarta, on 15th September 2018.
